The Significance of Asalha Bucha Day

Asalha Bucha Day is one of the most important days in Buddhism.

It commemorates the occasion when the Buddha delivered his first sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, to the five ascetics. This historic teaching marked the beginning of the Sangha, the community of monks, completing the Triple Gem:  The Buddha  The Dhamma  and The Sangha

For Buddhists around the world, this sacred period is a time to deepen faith, study the teachings, perform acts of generosity, and participate in activities that strengthen the connection between everyday life and Buddhist practice.

A Living Tradition of the Sea

For generations, coastal communities have relied upon waterways as pathways connecting people, livelihoods, and culture.

The Sea Procession of Phra Sivali symbolically carries blessings through these waters, bringing together Buddhist devotion and local traditions in a meaningful expression of faith.  By respectfully enshrining Phra Sivali aboard ceremonial boats and carrying him across the sea, the community expresses gratitude, unity, and a collective aspiration for peace, prosperity, and well-being.

The procession also serves as a reminder that the teachings of Buddhism remain relevant in modern life and continue to guide communities toward compassion, generosity, and harmony.

Why Phra Sivali?

Phra Sivali Thera is one of the most beloved arahants in Buddhism.  The Buddha himself praised Phra Sivali as the disciple who excelled above all others in receiving support and offerings.

Through countless lifetimes of generosity and selfless giving, Phra Sivali accumulated immense merit, resulting in extraordinary blessings throughout his life.  Even during journeys through remote forests and wilderness, he and his fellow monks never lacked food, support, or necessities.

For this reason, Phra Sivali has become a symbol of:  Prosperity  Abundance  Generosity  Success in journeys  and  The fruits of accumulated merit

To this day, Buddhists continue to honour Phra Sivali as a reminder that true prosperity arises from kindness, generosity, and virtuous actions.

Special Ceremony: Phra Upagutta

As part of this year’s festival, a special ceremony will once again honour Phra Upagutta, the revered arahant traditionally believed to reside in the “Navel of the Sea.”

According to Buddhist tradition, Phra Upagutta is invited to preside over important religious ceremonies, offering protection and helping to remove obstacles. The ceremonial invitation of Phra Upagutta represents an additional spiritual dimension of the festival and reflects a long-standing tradition respected by many Buddhist communities.

ความสำคัญของวันอาสาฬหบูชา

วันอาสาฬหบูชาเป็นวันสำคัญยิ่งทางพระพุทธศาสนา ตรงกับวันที่พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงปฐมเทศนา คือ ธรรมจักรกัปปวัตตนสูตร แก่ปัญจวัคคีย์ การแสดงธรรมครั้งนั้นก่อให้เกิดพระสงฆ์องค์แรกในโลก ทำให้พระรัตนตรัยเกิดขึ้นอย่างสมบูรณ์ ได้แก่  พระพุทธ พระธรรม  และ พระสงฆ์   พุทธศาสนิกชนจึงถือโอกาสนี้ในการศึกษาหลักธรรม ทำบุญ ปฏิบัติธรรม และร่วมกิจกรรมที่ช่วยสืบสานพระพุทธศาสนาให้ดำรงอยู่คู่สังคมไทย

ประเพณีแห่งศรัทธาบนสายน้ำ

สำหรับชุมชนชายฝั่งทะเล สายน้ำมิได้เป็นเพียงเส้นทางแห่งการดำรงชีวิต แต่ยังเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งการเชื่อมโยงผู้คน วัฒนธรรม และจิตวิญญาณ  การอัญเชิญพระสีวลีประดิษฐานบนเรือและเคลื่อนขบวนไปตามผืนน้ำ จึงเปรียบเสมือนการน้อมนำพรแห่งบุญกุศล ความเจริญรุ่งเรือง และความเป็นสิริมงคล ไปสู่ผู้คนตลอดเส้นทางแห่งศรัทธา

พระสีวลี : สัญลักษณ์แห่งความอุดมสมบูรณ์และผลแห่งบุญ

พระสีวลีเถระ เป็นพระอรหันตสาวกผู้ได้รับการยกย่องจากพระพุทธเจ้าว่าเป็น “เอตทัคคะทางผู้มีลาภมาก” ด้วยอานิสงส์แห่งการสั่งสมทานบารมีมาอย่างยาวนาน ส่งผลให้ท่านได้รับความอุปถัมภ์และลาภสักการะอย่างไม่ขาดสาย  แม้ในยามธุดงค์อยู่ในป่าลึก ท่านและคณะสงฆ์ก็ไม่เคยขาดแคลนปัจจัยในการดำรงชีวิต

พระสีวลีจึงเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่ง  ความเจริญรุ่งเรือง  ความอุดมสมบูรณ์  การให้ทานและความเมตตา   ความสำเร็จในการเดินทาง และ ผลแห่งบุญกุศลที่สั่งสมไว้

การแห่พระสีวลีทางทะเลจึงเป็นการน้อมนำคุณธรรมแห่งการให้ทาน ความศรัทธา และความเป็นสิริมงคล มาสู่ชีวิตของผู้คนและชุมชน

พิธีพิเศษ : อัญเชิญพระอุปคุตจากสะดือทะเล

ภายในงานปีนี้ จะมีการประกอบพิธีอัญเชิญ พระอุปคุต ซึ่งตามคติความเชื่อทางพระพุทธศาสนา ท่านเป็นพระอรหันต์ผู้คุ้มครองพระพุทธศาสนา และจำพรรษาอยู่ ณ “สะดือทะเล”

ก่อนการประกอบพิธีสำคัญ จะมีการอัญเชิญพระอุปคุตขึ้นจากทะเลเพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคลแก่การจัดงาน และเพื่อขจัดอุปสรรคทั้งปวง

พิธีดังกล่าวถือเป็นอีกหนึ่งกิจกรรมสำคัญที่ช่วยเติมเต็มมิติทางจิตวิญญาณให้กับงานในปีนี้
